What’s the Difference between Mbps and MBps?
The Internet providers advertise and display the internet speed in Mbps (Mega BITS per second). And when you download anything from the internet through your browser, torrent, download manager, or any other app, the speed you get is shown in MBps (Mega BYTES per second).
If you know about Computer Storage, 1 Byte is Equal to 8 Bits. Hence, your download speed is almost Eight times less than the speed advertised in the plan.
For Example, if your internet plan shows 100 Mbps speed, you will get 100/8 = 12.5 MBps of speed (Approximately). Even the 100 Mbps is an approximate number. Therefore, your download speed should be around 10-18 MB per second (Let’s take an average of 14 MBps). So, if you are downloading a 700 MB file, it will be downloaded in 700/14 = 50 seconds (less than 1 minute).
Another example, if your plan speed is 16 Mbps, then your download speed will be 16/8 = 2 MBps approximately. However, you might get a lower speed while downloading through a torrent or when you are connected to the VPN (Virtual Private Network).
Usually, the internet providers advertise a rough number close enough to the actual speed. To see the actual speed of your internet, you can use the online Speed Test. It shows the speed in Mbps (Megabits per second) as advertised by your Internet provider. Also, note that your internet speed keeps fluctuating every second. So, you may get a higher speed at some time and lower sometimes.
Frequently Asked Queries:
Why Download Speed is less than Advertised?
The advertising speed by the internet providers shows the Internet Speed in Mbps (Megabits per second), and your computer shows the download speed in MBps (Megabytes per second). 8 bits will make 1 Byte. Therefore, you have to divide the advertised speed by 8 to determine the actual download speed.
Mbps Vs MBps – The Conclusion:
Many of my friends used to complain that the Internet Providers advertise at higher speed but provide less. It was because they didn’t know the difference between Mbps and MBps. If someone tells you the same, you can share this article so that they can understand the difference between Mbps Vs MBps. Also, you can easily calculate the MBps (download speed) by dividing the Mbps (advertised speed) by 8.
